Sciatica is one of the most common health problems that affect millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the sciatic nerve, a large nerve that runs from the lower back down to the legs, is compressed or irritated. The condition can cause symptoms such as pain, numbness, and weakness in the affected leg. While there are several treatments available, finding relief from sciatica pain can be challenging. However, recent studies have shown that upper cervical chiropractic care can be an effective treatment for sciatica. In this blog post, we will discuss how upper cervical chiropractic care can help treat pain associated with sciatica.

Upper cervical chiropractic care is a specialized form of chiropractic care that focuses on the upper part of the neck. The upper cervical region involves the top two vertebrae in the spinal column, known as the atlas and the axis. These two vertebrae are responsible for supporting the head and allowing movement for the neck. Upper cervical chiropractic care uses gentle, precise adjustments to correct any misalignments in these vertebrae. The aim of this form of chiropractic care is to reduce pressure on the nerves and restore proper function to the body.

The sciatic nerve originates in the lower part of the spinal cord and travels down through the legs. Any misalignments or subluxations in the upper cervical region can affect the proper functioning of the sciatic nerve. Upper cervical chiropractic care can help address these issues by correcting misalignments in the upper cervical region. By doing so, it can release pressure on the sciatic nerve, reducing inflammation, irritation, and other symptoms associated with sciatica.

Several studies have shown that upper cervical chiropractic care can be an effective treatment for sciatica pain. A case study published in the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research in 2013 reported significant improvements in sciatica pain after upper cervical chiropractic adjustments. Another study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics in 2011 also reported positive outcomes for sciatica patients who received upper cervical chiropractic care. The study found that patients experienced significant improvements in pain and disability after receiving care.

One of the main benefits of upper cervical chiropractic care is that it is a safe and non-invasive treatment option. Unlike some conventional medical treatments for sciatica, upper cervical chiropractic care does not involve the use of drugs or surgery, which can have adverse effects on the body. Moreover, upper cervical chiropractic care focuses on addressing the root cause of the problem rather than just treating the symptoms. This approach ensures long-term relief and enhances the body's natural healing ability.

Upper cervical chiropractic care is a safe and effective alternative for treating sciatica pain. It works by correcting spinal misalignment, which addresses the root cause of the problem, leading to the resolution of pain. Upper cervical chiropractic care is gentle, non-invasive, and drug-free, making it a great alternative for people who suffer from sciatic pain. If you are struggling with sciatica pain, consider seeking chiropractic care at an upper cervical chiropractic center near you.

           Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

Fresh fruits and vegetables are essential in maintaining a healthy diet as they are rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber. They also provide the much-needed antioxidants that help fight off infection-causing agents in the body. Juicy fruits like pineapple, apples, and cherries are also beneficial for people with joint inflammation as they help lower inflammation in the body. Chiropractors recommend eating a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables regularly.

Vegetables like onions and garlic can improve bone density, while leafy greens provide a good source of calcium. Berries are also known to be an excellent source of antioxidants, which protect against diseases such as cancer. Additionally, consuming a wide variety of fruits and vegetables will help you get all the essential nutrients your body needs for optimum health. Eating plenty of fruits and veggies can also help improve digestive health, reduce risk for heart disease, boost immunity, and keep cholesterol levels in check. Finally, adding more fresh produce to your diet can help you reach and maintain a healthy weight. For maximal nutrition, aim to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Make sure to mix it up by including different colors, flavors, and textures in your meals!

           Wild Caught Fish

Wild-caught fish, especially fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and tuna, provide omega-3 fatty acids that are essential for proper brain development and function, healthy skin, and cellular growth. Omega-3’s have also been found to reduce inflammation, which is helpful for those with joint pain. Chiropractors recommend eating fish twice a week to get the recommended dosage of omega-3’s.

Omega-3 fatty acids differ from Omega-6 fatty acids by providing an anti-inflammatory effect. Omega-6 fatty acids, found in many vegetable oils such as canola oil and soybean oil, are pro-inflammatory. This means that if the ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 is not balanced, inflammation can occur leading to bone and joint pain. It is important to try and maintain a healthy ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 by including more wild-caught fatty fish in your diet, while limiting the intake of processed foods that contain high amounts of vegetable oils. Increasing the amount of omega-3 rich foods can also help reduce symptoms associated with chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Foods high in Omega-3 include salmon, anchovies, mackerel, tuna, herring, sardines and walnuts. Additionally taking a daily dose of fish oil supplements can help ensure that you are meeting your omega-3 fatty acid needs.

           Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds are an excellent source of protein, fiber, and healthy fats. They’re also rich in minerals such as magnesium, which is vital for proper muscle function and bone health. Almonds, cashews, and pumpkin seeds are some of the most recommended nuts and seeds for optimum health. When buying nuts and seeds, select raw, unsalted options.

Nuts and seeds make a great addition to your diet, as they can provide a variety of health benefits. For example, walnuts are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which have been linked to improved heart health and reduced inflammation. Eating almonds has also been found to reduce cholesterol levels and may help regulate blood sugar levels. Moreover, studies show that consuming pumpkin seeds may be beneficial in protecting against certain types of cancer.

           Whole Grains

Whole grains are rich in fiber, antioxidants, and key minerals like iron and zinc. They help regulate blood sugar levels, which is essential for maintaining optimal health. Whole grains also provide the body with sustained energy, keeping you feeling fuller, longer. Some examples of whole grains include whole wheat, whole-grain pasta, and brown rice.

Whole grains differ from refined grains in that they are not stripped of their beneficial parts, leaving them more nutritious. Refined grains such as white bread, white rice, and bleached flour have had the outer layer removed during processing which removes many essential vitamins and minerals. Eating whole grains helps provide the body with these vitamins and minerals, as well as other benefits like reducing cholesterol levels and stimulating weight loss.

           Probiotic Rich Foods

Probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, and kimchi contain beneficial bacteria that help improve gut health, boost immunity, and support optimal overall health. Gut health has also been linked to mental health, and eating probiotic-rich foods regularly can help improve mood and reduce anxiety.

Additionally, probiotic-rich foods aid in digestion and provide important vitamins and minerals. They also help improve nutrient absorption from other foods you eat, so it's essential to include them in a balanced diet. Finally, probiotics are linked to reducing inflammation throughout the body, which can lower your risk of chronic disease. Incorporating more probiotic-rich foods into your diet is a great way to support your health.

Have you ever experienced chronic neck pain or headaches that just won't go away no matter what you do? You may have tried exercises, pain medications, and even alternative medicine, but nothing seems to work. Unfortunately, many people suffer from these symptoms without realizing that they might be related to a misalignment of their upper cervical spine. Upper cervical chiropractic care is a highly specialized type of chiropractic that focuses on the first two bones of your neck known as the atlas and axis. Let's explore the connection between upper cervical chiropractic care and overall health.

The upper cervical spine plays a vital role in the overall health of your body because it houses a crucial part of your nervous system called the brainstem. The brainstem is responsible for controlling many vital functions of your body, including breathing, heart rate, digestion, and sleep. When the atlas or axis vertebrae become misaligned, it can put pressure on the brainstem, causing interference in the nervous system's normal function. This interference can lead to a wide range of health issues, including chronic pain, headaches, fatigue, and even digestive problems.

The goal of upper cervical chiropractic care is to restore proper alignment of the atlas and axis, allowing the brainstem and nervous system to function correctly.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic is a specialized form of chiropractic care that focuses on the top two vertebrae in the neck, known as the atlas and axis. These two vertebrae are responsible for supporting the head and controlling its movement. If they become misaligned, it can result in chronic headaches, neck pain, dizziness and other issues. Upper Cervical Chiropractic works to gently realign these vertebrae, restoring balance to the neck and spine. This helps reduce pain and discomfort in the neck, shoulders and back while also improving overall function of the body. Other benefits to Upper Cervical Chiropractic include improved energy levels, better sleep quality, and increased mobility. It can also help reduce inflammation in the body which can lead to improved overall health.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic works by gently and precisely realigning the atlas and axis vertebrae in the neck. This is done by using a specialized adjustment technique that is tailored to each patient's individual needs. The adjustment itself is gentle, with most patients feeling immediate relief from their symptoms after one session. The chiropractor may also use additional techniques such as massage, heat or cold therapy, or ultrasound to help further alleviate any pain or discomfort.

, we utilize a complete and comprehensive examination in order to determine if Upper Cervical Chiropractic is an appropriate form of treatment for our patients. This includes a detailed review of the patient's medical history, an orthopedic exam, postural analysis, range-of-motion, Tytron Scan, and 3D CBCT scanning. The Tytron scanner uses infrared waves to measure spinal misalignments with high precision, allowing for the best possible care. With this tool, the chiropractor can determine not only if the vertebrae are misaligned, but also the degree and direction of the misalignment. 3D CBCT scanning is a cutting-edge technology used by upper cervical chiropractors to accurately diagnose and treat misalignments of the atlas and axis vertebrae. This type of imaging uses cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to produce three-dimensional images of the spine in order to pinpoint and measure the exact location of any misalignment. With this information, the chiropractor can then develop a customized treatment plan to target and correct the misalignments.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic is a specialized form of chiropractic care that focuses on the top two vertebrae in the neck, known as the atlas and axis. This type of treatment has been proven to reduce pain and discomfort while also improving overall function. It can be used to treat a variety of conditions including headaches, neck pain, dizziness, inflammation, poor sleep quality and more.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic has been known to treat even chronic issues such as TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder) and migraines. It is an effective way to address the underlying cause of these conditions, which often originates from misalignments in the neck. Upper Cervical Chiropractic can also help to reduce stress and tension in the neck, shoulders and back, providing a more holistic approach to health.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic is a safe and non-invasive treatment option that can provide long-term relief from neck, shoulder and back pain. Unlike traditional chiropractic care, it does not require any invasive techniques such as manipulation or cracking of the spine. Additionally, Upper Cervical Chiropractic is not only focused on reducing pain and discomfort, but also improving overall function of the body. Improved energy levels, better sleep quality, increased mobility and a reduction in inflammation can all result from this type of treatment.

With this form of treatment, the underlying cause of the issue can be addressed, rather than simply managing symptoms. This leads to long-term relief and improved function. Upper Cervical Chiropractic is also a safe and non-invasive form of treatment that can provide relief without the use of drugs or surgery.

Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic is a holistic alternative for children in need of improved health and function. It works by gently correcting misalignment that has occurred at the top of the spine, or the upper cervical vertebra. This misalignment can lead to issues such as malformations or injuries to the head, neck, or face. By using both manual and digital analysis methods to measure how far out of alignment the bones are, this chiropractic technique helps ensure accurate adjustment targeting specific areas of the body. The benefits of Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic include better immunity, improved posture, and enhanced nervous system health without any harsh manipulation techniques. This method can be used on infants as well as young adults up through adulthood, so i

Upper Cervical Chiropractic (UCC) has become an increasingly popular option for helping children achieve better neurological performance and overall wellness. It is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that focuses on aligning the top two vertebrae of the spine to maximize neurological function and health.

is safe for kids as it uses extremely precise, small movements to adjust the spine without forceful popping or cracking motions which may be uncomfortable for smaller bodies. In fact, studies have shown that UCC can positively improve overall consciousness, sensory regulation, sleep patterns, eye contact and speech in children with special healthcare needs when practiced regularly. As such, parents should strongly consider UCC as a viable way to ensure the long term health of their child.

from developing. This is especially important for children since their bones are not fully developed yet, making them particularly sensitive to improper alignment. UCC works by using an upper cervical specific spinal adjustment – or a gentle thrust or push – to correct the misalignment. This can help keep the spine and neck aligned and reduce pain, tension, and improved nervous system functioning. Additionally, UCC can provide relief for common issues such as headaches, vertigo, digestive disturbances and other musculoskeletal dysfunctions. It is important to note that UCC is not a cure-all and should be used in tandem with other treatments such as physical therapy, massage and lifestyle modifications. With proper care and attention, however, it can prevent long-term health issues and help you live your life to the fullest.

When it comes to finding an upper cervical chiropractor for your child, the Blair technique and NUCCA method are both top options.

use full spine analysis followed by a very precise technique which is gentle and safe for kids. On the other hand, NUCCA practitioners utilize measurements to determine subluxations in the neck area and then make very specific adjustments to correct misalignments. To ensure you find a qualified practitioner, look for certified Blair or NUCCA doctors whose training includes intensive courses on spinal biomechanics. Ask potential candidates about their experience with children and research online reviews from real patients first-hand accounts. Taking these steps will help make sure that your family's health is in good hands!

Blair practitioners combine full spine analysis with a targeted technique that is gentle and safe for children. Using the analysis, certified practitioners can identify restrictive areas of the spine and use their hands to restore joint mobility. This technique relies on specific movements to open up the joints to allow for easier movement and improved range of motion. The technique also helps to restore posture and balance within the body, improving overall health.

Blair practitioners must complete rigorous training courses on spinal biomechanics in order to become certified, which includes learning about the anatomy of the spine and its relationship with various muscles, ligaments and other tissues in the body. With this knowledge they are able to assess postural alignment issues and determine where adjustments should be made. Blair techniques involve a variety of techniques such as muscle energy techniques, mobilizations, manual adjustments and stretching exercises designed to increase flexibility. These techniques can be used in combination or separately depending on the patient's needs. The benefits of having a Blair practitioner working with your child extend beyond physical health; these professionals are also known for offering emotional support for both children and parents during treatment sessions.

One of the best ways to do this is through preventative care - incorporating healthy habits into daily life that might help reduce the risk of illness before it starts. Numerous studies have shown that by introducing healthy eating habits, physical activity, appropriate sleep patterns, and more, children's overall health can benefit significantly. Research has also demonstrated that practical steps such as implementing a routine and limiting screen time can bolster both mental and physical development in children. If you're looking for a positive way to influence your child's well-being, why not give natural healthcare a try!

           What is Upper Cervical Chiropractic?

Upper cervical chiropractic is a form of medical care that focuses on the alignment of the first two vertebrae in the neck. It is believed that misalignment of these vertebrae can cause a variety of health issues, such as headaches, neck pain, vertigo, and even some issues with balance. Upper cervical chiropractic is designed to gently and effectively realign these vertebrae, restoring balance to the body's nervous system.

            Principles Behind Upper Cervical Chiropractic

Upper cervical chiropractic is based on the principle that the head and neck must be in proper alignment for optimal health. This is because the cervical vertebrae are connected to the spinal cord, which controls all bodily functions. When these vertebrae become misaligned or move out of place even slightly, it can cause a range of health issues. Upper cervical chiropractic is designed to correct these misalignments, restoring balance and allowing the body to heal itself.

C1, or the Atlas bone found in the upper cervical region of your spine, is particularly important for safeguarding the junction between your brain and body - known as the brainstem. As part of this critical Central Nervous System (CNS), it works with both your spinal cord and brain to regulate all other systems in our bodies. The brainstem is critical for ensuring that the body can function optimally; however, it relies on the upper cervical spine being properly aligned. When these vertebrae are not lined up correctly, communication between the brain and other parts of our physiology suffer. That's why misalignment in this area has a far-reaching effect throughout all areas of the human system – from cognitive performance to musculoskeletal health. To guarantee clear messages are sent between your brain and body, proper alignment with your upper cervical region must be maintained.

The objective of upper cervical care is to provide the body with enough stability and retrain muscle memory to maintain the Atlas in its proper position, so that misalignments do not persist continuously. This helps our general health far beyond treating symptoms such as neck or back pain. Once we reach a consistent level, we evaluate if another adjustment is required or not - just like when visiting your dentist for a checkup and only getting fillings where needed.

Upper cervical chiropractic works by realigning the first two vertebrae in the neck. During treatment, a skilled chiropractor will use gentle and precise movements to restore balance and alignment to the head and neck area. These movements are designed to be non-invasive and cause little or no discomfort for the patient. The patient may experience a slight pulling sensation as the adjustments are made, but this should not be painful.

Upper cervical chiropractors use light force adjustments which are tailored to each patient’s individual needs based on their posture analysis and X-rays. The objective is to restore proper alignment between C1 (the Atlas) and C2 (the Axis). This helps reduce nerve irritation caused by misalignments in this area so that your body can function optimally without pain or discomfort. A typical treatment session may last anywhere from 15 minutes up to an hour depending upon your particular condition; however most patients require multiple sessions for optimal results.

           4 Benefits of Decompression Therapy

If you suffer from chronic back pain, you may be familiar with the term “decompression therapy.” Decompression therapy is a nonsurgical treatment option that can provide relief from back pain. The therapy entails lying on a table while a machine gently stretches the spine. This stretch pulls the disc material away from the nerve root and relieves pressure on the nerves. Decompression therapy has been proven to be an effective treatment for herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, and other spinal conditions. Here are 4 benefits of decompression therapy:

           1) Nonsurgical Treatment Option for herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, and sciatica

           2) Helps with range of motion and flexibility

           3) Non-Invasive with few to no side effects

           4) Affordable compared to other treatments

Decompression therapy can help relieve pain from conditions like herniated discs, sciatica, and degenerative disc disease

Decompression therapy is a minimally invasive treatment option for various painful ailments of the spine and musculoskeletal system, including herniated discs, sciatica, and degenerative disc disease. This non-surgical therapy can be used as a primary form of treatment or as an adjunct to other treatments such as pain medications or physical rehabilitation. During decompression therapy, gentle tractioning is applied to the spine in order to reduce pressure on spinal structures and nerve roots and improve circulation of spinal fluid. This helps provide lasting relief from pain without the risks associated with surgery. Decompression therapy also facilitates faster healing time, improved mobility in the spine, accelerated recovery time after injury, and improved posture. It is a viable solution for those suffering from lower back pain caused by these common conditions, providing safe and effective short-term and long-term results so they can get back to doing the activities they enjoy.

It can also help improve range of motion and flexibility

Decompression therapy is a great way to help not just treat, but also prevent issues related to range of motion and flexibility. By decompressing the spine through gentle decompressive tractions and manual stretching, space between the joints are created which can help improve range of motion and flexibility. Additionally, decompression therapy helps reduce pressure on nerve roots and discs which can further enhance these benefits by helping to reduce pain in many cases as well. For anyone dealing with chronic pain or stiffness who would like to help improve their mobility, decompression therapy is an excellent option for treatment.

The therapy is non-invasive and has few side effects

Decompression therapy is an exciting new development in modern medicine that can help patients overcome long-term pain without any invasive techniques or troublesome side effects. This non-invasive treatment has been proven to be effective for many painful physical conditions, such as bulging or herniated discs, sciatica, and neck or lower back pain. It typically involves using a decompression table to decompress the spine and pelvis with the aim of reducing pressure on pinched nerves. The decompression table gently stretches the targeted area thanks to motorized traction while also providing steady pressure, allowing the affected muscles and ligaments to relax and heal over time. By concentrating on releasing pressure at specific locations along the spine and discs, decompression therapy relieves pain more effectively than other nonsurgical treatments like injections or medications.

It is relatively affordable compared to other forms of treatment

Spinal decompression is a safe and non-invasive treatment for spinal conditions and related pain. It utilizes machines to create a subtle pulling motion, taking pressure off spinal discs for enhanced spinal health. Compared to other forms of treatment, spinal decompression is relatively affordable. Additionally, it can be used as an alternative for those individuals who cannot or do not want to undergo more invasive treatments such as spinal surgery. Spinal decompression is a great option for anyone looking to reduce pain without breaking the bank and with minimal risk.

Food and Nutrition - Part 1

There are so many things I can cover regarding food and nutrition – it is endless.

Theoretically speaking, “you are what you eat” is a true statement. What we put into our bodies, chemically, is one way to affect the nervous system – good or bad.

My patients often ask me what else they can do, in addition to getting regular chiropractic adjustments, to better their health. Although there are many complementary recommendations, diet and nutrition is among the most important. By no means am I a dietitian or a nutritionist. My goal in covering this topic is to provide general knowledge so that you can make better informed choices for your health.

This topic will be covered in several posts over the next few months. For now, we will keep things basic and talk about organic vs. non-organic.

           Why Organic?

There are many benefits to consuming organic foods compared to non-organic foods. Some of these benefits include:

          1.	Minimal/fewer pesticides

          2.	Fresher food

          3.	Organic farming is better for the environment

          4.	Organically raised animals are NOT given antibiotics or growth hormones

          5.	GMO-Free

Intaking GMO’s and pesticides daily can have varying health implications, especially to mental and emotional health.

           GMO’s and Pesticides

GMO’s, known as Genetically Modified Organisms, are engineered to make food crops resistant to the herbicide Roundup. Roundup is used to prevent the weeds from damaging the products.

The problem here is two-fold: One, we are eating foods that are genetically modified. Secondly, because the crops are resistant to herbicides, we are consuming the herbicides/pesticides. Can you imagine every time you eat a GMO or non-organic food product; you are ingesting pesticides a little at a time?

Here is a list of some of the food items that GMO’s are commonly found in:

          -	Corn/Corn Syrup

          -	Soybean

          -	Squash

          -	Zucchini

          -	Canola

          -	All Processed foods

This is just a short list of many GMO products.

           Risks of Pesticide Consumption

Most of us will have a build up of pesticides that we have consumed and accumulated over years of exposure. The chemicals impact on our bodies can lead to health issues, such as, headaches, birth defects, or added strain on weakened immune systems.

Even at low exposure, there have been studies published indicating this could increase the risk of certain cancers. Additionally, pregnant women, fetuses, and children are among the most vulnerable to pesticide exposure.

During pregnancy, pesticides can be passed from mother to child in the womb, and then again in breast milk. As immune systems in children are still developing, early exposure to pesticides can cause developmental delays, behavioral disorders, or motor dysfunction.

           The Dirty Dozen (Produce only)

Often times, it is difficult to know what we should buy organic or not. The general rule of thumb is: if it is something that you can peel away and do not eat, you can get away with it not being organic. In other words, these food items will have minimal or no amounts of pesticides in them. They are also GMO-free products.

According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), the list of the 12 dirtiest food items, as of 2020 are:

          1.	Strawberries	7. Peaches

          2.	Spinach	8. Cherries

          3.	Kale 9. Pears

          4.	Nectarines	10. Tomatoes

          5.	Apples 11. Celery

          6.	Grapes 12. Potatoes

           The Clean Fifteen

As mentioned before, there are some food items where we peel away the skin and do not eat it – these tend to be the cleanest ones and safe to consume non-organically. They include:

          1.	Avocados	8. Asparagus

          2.	Sweet Corn	9. Cauliflower

          3.	Pineapple	10. Cantaloupes

          4.	Onions 11. Broccoli

          5.	Papaya 12. Mushrooms

          6.	Sweet Peas 13. Cabbage

          (frozen)	14. Honeydew Melon

          7.	Eggplant	15. Kiwi

I understand some of the items above do not have skins to peel away, such as, cauliflower or broccoli. These items typically have the lowest amount of pesticide residue.

To be clear, if you cannot find the organic items from the Dirty Dozen list, it is still better to just consume these non-organically, than it is to avoid them altogether. At least you would still get some nutrients from these produces than not.

What about Cows, Chickens, or Pigs?

In addition to fruits and vegetables, it is just as important to buy organic meat, eggs, and dairy if it is within your budget.

Industrially raised animals are typically fed corn, grains, antibiotics, growth hormones, pesticides, and sewage sludge. These will have health consequences for the animals, and in turn, we are consuming those unhealthy animals. As humans, we are essentially eating what the animals are being fed.

When it comes to choosing meat, eggs, and dairy, we should always be looking for products labeled:

          •	Pastured Raised (dairy)

          •	100% Grass Fed (beef)

          •	Certified Organic (chicken, pork, eggs)

I understand to go 100% organic can be costly. To keep things in budget, consider buying produce when they are in season. That is when produce is the freshest and cheapest. Also, buying certain cuts of meat from organically raised animals – organic chicken thighs vs. organic chicken breasts, for example.

According to some sources, the human body is made up of more than 70% water. Therefore, it would make sense to stay hydrated daily. In fact, it is a vital part of our health.

Many people will say they drink plenty of tea, coffee, or sports drinks – which all contains water, yes. Logic suggests if something has water in it, it should suffice as our daily intake. However, this could not be further from the truth. Once you add something to water, your body will digest it as a food product and start to break down any chemical or nutrient.

How Much Water Should I Drink?

We have all been told to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. The problem with this recommendation is, I do not believe in a one size fits all type of recommendation. We are all different people, and our body types are all different as well. For some people, 64 oz of water may be too much! For some, that may not be enough. So, it would make more sense to drink as much as our individual body needs.

The BEST recommendation is – Drink ½ of your body weight in ounces…minimum! Increase the daily minimum when exercising or excessive sweating occurs.

Overtime, you can start to develop some mild to severe health conditions when you do not consume enough water. Some mild to severe complications include:

heat stroke or heat exhaustion during vigorous exercise

urinary and kidney problems, leading to UTI, kidney stones, or even kidney failure

          Muscle cramps

Is Bottle Water or Filtered Water Better?

To start, I DO NOT recommend Aquafina and Dasani water. These brand-name companies put additives into purified tap water. Also, the pH level of these waters has a pH of around 4-6, which is highly acidic and is not good for us. Normal drinking water should always be neutral, with a pH of 7.

Some of the safer bottled waters to drink are: Evian, Fiji, Crystal Geyser, Arrowhead, Voss, and Mountain Valley Spring Water.

Additionally, just drinking filtered water from your home is a better option than Aquafina or Dasani.

Although drinking some of these bottled waters can be safe, to get real health benefits from drinking water, I recommend Ionized Alkaline Water. Noticed I said, Ionized Alkaline Water, which is different than the “alkaline water” you see at grocery stores – a major difference!

           Alkaline vs. Ionized Alkaline Water

It appears some companies are coming out with Alkaline water as a healthier option. This is a misconception. You get no health benefits from just drinking alkaline water alone. In fact, drinking too much bottled alkaline water can cause health concerns.

One of the biggest benefits in drinking Ionized Alkaline water is, you get antioxidants compared to the bottled alkaline waters sold by these companies. Most alkaline water is around a pH of 8-9.5. However, you can take any water, add chemicals, minerals, and buffers to it to increase the pH and call it “alkaline water,” which is what these companies do. But these waters lack the antioxidants needed for healing.

One big company who is currently taking advantage of this marketing propaganda is: Essentia

BEWARE: Do NOT be fooled by this. I am here to tell you; you cannot bottle Ionized Alkaline Water.

Free Radicals and Antioxidants

Not consuming enough antioxidants through diet will cause an imbalance ratio of free radicals. An abundance of free radicals in your system (high oxidative stress), can turn cells cancerous, as well as cause damage to your cells, protein, and DNA, which leads to chronic diseases. Therefore, it is important we have enough antioxidants to absorb it, reducing oxidative stress.

Below is an image explaining how antioxidants work by eliminating free radicals.

Free radicals come in many forms, mostly through the food we eat, medication we take, pollution, and even the kind of water we drink.

Antioxidants are typically in gas form when ionized from water, specifically molecular hydrogen. So, when you take water and filter it through a system to extract all the harsh chemicals out of it, you create molecular hydrogen (H2). Molecular hydrogen is the most powerful antioxidant and healing molecule for your body. It also has a very short shelf life, lasting only several days to a week. For this very reason, you cannot bottle Ionized Alkaline Water for sale. Almost all bottled waters are bottled for months before they hit the shelf in grocery stores.

Drinking Ionized Alkaline Water is not the only source of getting antioxidants into your body, however it is an important part considering how much water we should be consuming daily. We can get antioxidants from our diets as well. Just drinking regular bottled water or filter water is a better option than bottled alkaline water – at least you are not putting harsh chemicals into your body!

The winter season is upon us – and with that, the one thing many of us are usually concerned about is the flu season. However, that seems to be in our rear-view mirror giving the current situation of our country.

We all know what I am referring to, the novel coronavirus aka Covid-19. Regardless of what we are all doing to stay safe during this time, when it comes to this virus or any viruses our bodies encounter, the biggest difference on how it effects each person is how strong one’s immune system is – the Host!

Think about it this way – when someone gets a common cold, how long does that cold last? Well, some recover in 3 days, some in 7 days, while others can be sick for weeks. Is it because they got a stronger infecting virus? No – it is the immune response and job of your body to help fight it off as quickly as possible.

That is the simple truth of it. The one common denominator when it comes to each person encountering any virus is how strong is your immune system? This will determine the severity of the onset of symptoms.

As a Healthcare provider, I am often asked by my patients on what they can do to stay as healthy as possible; what more can they do other than following guidelines of wearing a mask or social distancing. Other than the obvious, have a good healthy and

minerals are great ways to put the good stuff into our bodies that we do not normally get enough of through our diets. I am going to

address and answer a few of the most frequently asked questions when it comes to supplements:

What supplements do you recommend I take and how much of it?

To start, as a good base, I would recommend a multivitamin and Omega-3 fish oil for everyone. There are plenty of benefits of just taking those 2 alone. Omega-3 is anti-inflammatory in nature, which helps to reduce inflammation in your body, along with promoting better heart function.

Next, we need to take a few other supplements to help boost our immune system. The first being Vitamin D3. There are so many benefits Vitamin D3 gives us. It is the KEY nutrient to innate immunity. This means, Vitamin D3 not only arms your body’s defense for immediate response, but it also helps to protect your cells and prevents viruses from entering them. Vitamin D3 is an Ace2 Inhibitor, which works by blocking the sites where viruses can attach on your cells.

Research shows adequate amounts of Vitamin D3 in serum levels can reduce the risk of contracting viruses by up to 77%.

Additionally, Zinc is a very important mineral that has over 300 different functions in our body. Zinc is a natural antioxidant and is used to make White Blood Cells (WBC), which is extremely vital for our immune system. One of the great benefits with Zinc is, it helps to reduce oxidative stress levels. This is important to understand because viruses will attack your cells if it senses high oxidative stress levels

in your body. In other words, Zinc is helpful in reducing the reproduction or proliferation of infected viruses.

Let’s review what I just mentioned – Vitamin D3 blocks viruses from attaching to your cells and Zinc reduces the spread of infected cells! I cannot stress enough the importance of taking these two supplements together in helping to boost your immune system.

How do I know which brands are good or not good?

This is a really tough thing to distinguish, as there are hundreds of different brands to choose from. If you are like many, you don’t want to take any drugs and are looking for a more natural way to help. When asked, typically your doctor will just broadly tell you to take this vitamin and that vitamin and you can easily get them at any local store. Our challenge is, what is available to us on those shelves (not all, but most) are usually very low-quality products that will bear minimal benefits when taken.

A good rule of thumb when it comes to vitamins and minerals is, you get what you pay for. There is a bit of a higher cost for buying healthier products, which in turn, will yield better efficacy. If you are currently taking any supplements and have questions on whether it is good or not, I encourage you to bring them in the office and the doctor will be glad to take a look at the list of ingredients for you.

Are supplements safe for my kids to take?

Growing up, most of us have been told, at one point or another, by our parents that we should always take our vitamins. Well guess what, vitamins are supplements and are completely safe to take for children. These days, vitamins for kids come in all shapes and forms. This is even more important to be careful on the quality of products. For example, gummy vitamins will typically have corn syrup or other offensive ingredients that our children should not be consuming regularly.

Additionally, I would also encourage children to take probiotics with the multivitamins. We have about 80% of our immune function in our gut. A probiotic with 10 billion CFU, which is good for ages 2 and up, would be a good basic one to take. Moreover, there is a specific probiotic that focuses on E.N.T. – Ears, Nose, Throat. E.N.T. Biotics are extremely helpful in preventing or helping children who frequently gets ear infections, sinus issues, or even sore throats.

In summary, I would encourage everyone to get a set of blood lab test done with their doctor. It would be good to see if one is indeed deficient in Vitamin D and Zinc. Also, if you are on other medications, please consult with your doctor as well prior to adding supplements.

In our office, we support a company called, Protocol for Life Balance. They are based in the U.S. and have consistently created products that are of higher quality than most. I can always rely on them not putting offensive ingredients in the production of their supplements. At the end of the day, supplementing with high quality Vitamins and Minerals to boost your immune system will help in keeping your body as protected as it can be, not just during the winter season, but all year long.

Chiropractic care is like constructing a building - certain things have to happen in a particular order in order for everything to stand strong and work well. When building a house, if you tried to put up your walls before your solid foundation, your walls would be weak and probably collapse. If you tried to put on your roof before the walls were ready, you would run into the same problem. The same is true for your body. Your body has to go through a particular plan of care in order to repair itself correctly and fully.

*There are three general phases of chiropractic care*:

           Phase 1: Relief Care

If you are in pain when you visit our clinic, the first objective is to help you feel better. Depending on the severity of your problem, it is typical to need care 2-3 times per week for 4-12 weeks.

           Phase 2: Corrective/Restorative Care

During the corrective care phase, muscles and other tissues are allowed to heal more completely, thereby helping prevent injury. It is typical to need care 4-8 times per month for 6-24 months, depending on your overall health and the severity of your problem. The more severe your condition, the longer the care most likely will be.

           Phase 3: Wellness Care

Once your body has fully healed, it is important to come in for periodic adjustments to avoid problems in the future, to feel and function at a higher level instead of letting your body slip back into a reduced state of health. Usually, this only requires a quick visit to the chiropractor 1-4 times per month, based on your lifestyle and goals.

Let me start off by saying, not all chiropractors are alike. Although they go by the same name, chiropractors today differ greatly in technique and philosophy. To sum it up, there are two main types of chiropractors:

The first type of chiropractor is the conventional chiropractor; they focus on 3 things: increasing range of motion, decreasing muscle spasm/tension, and reducing pain temporarily. They do a great job at spinal manipulation and some people get good results from that. But, there are some people who sees a crack in the wall and they putty it up. People who do what I do - and there aren’t many of us - focus on Structural Correction. We look behind the wall; we look at the structure; we look at the beams and the foundation first, then we fix the other stuff, or the other stuff often fixes itself. Some people want a bandage, while others need the stitches because they don’t want to keep putting the bandage on.

In our practice, we are looking for structural abnormalities. A structural abnormality is a Structural Shift. More specifically, the (structural) shift I work with is called, Atlas Displacement Complex, or (ADC). So, if you have an ADC, it is typically the underlying cause of your secondary conditions.

As a result of an ADC, one can also expect to see an Anterior Head Syndrome, which can lead to a number of other secondary conditions. In short, a Secondary Condition cannot be soothed or even removed UNTIL the Primary Condition is fully addressed – the structural shift.

A Structural Shift can happen from any number of injuries. It can be from accidents or just living life, but the structure has shifted from its normal place. If it’s shifted just a little bit, you’re not broken. In other words, if you’re a little bit off, no big deal. But, if there’s a moderate shift, then it’s a serious issue, and this must be addressed.

Now, the way we determine that is, we will perform 4 main Objective tests to determine the presence of a structural shift. We use: 1) Structural Corrective Radiographs, otherwise known as Cone Beam CT scans, 2) Structural Analysis using our Multi-Axial Structural Analysis Machine, 3) Digital Structural Analysis, 4) Structural Thermographic Reading. Lastly, we will perform a series of Neurological and Orthopedic tests. If we find one or more indicators that tell us that you have a Structural Shift/ADC, then we will be recommending a very specific plan of care to address it.

Before we get into that, if you have a Structural Shift, typically your family Medical Doctor will recommend the use of some pain killers, at first. If you’re not having a lot of success, there might be some cortisone shots. That’s when they inject an acid into the joint to reduce the inflammation. Unfortunately, a byproduct of that is the degradation of the cartilage around the joint. But this is what they do. Sometimes they will recommend physical therapy as well. However, that’s working the muscles, and if you do have a structural condition, that’s not going to help it. But, that’s what they do, and I’m not saying that it’s bad, you’ll probably even get a little relief.

Here at Advanced Chiropractic, we create a plan of care to really make some inroads and correct your Structural Shift. So, if we find that you have a Structural Shift, we are going to recommend an initial phase of care. We are going to check and adjust you, if necessary, each visit followed by structural rehabilitation exercises.

And then, we will do a progress examination towards the end of your initial phase of care, and then we’ll go from there. So, once we get to that point, I am going to show you a way to protect the work that you just achieved with us. In other words, once we correct this, we want to make sure that we don’t revisit this with the same intensity again. You will be given the option to go on a protection plan. The protection plan is not a requirement; it is simply your option to protect your investment, should you choose to.

So, here is how my solution is going to correct your Structural Shift. As we are correcting your Structural Shifts (and stabilize your atlas), the nerves that are being compressed are going to basically come to life again. Like a foot coming off a hose. And, that’s going to allow for the nerves to do what they do - that’s going to remove the constriction. As a result, that’s going to allow your body to start healing again. That’s how it works! By doing this, the nerves that are going around the blood vessels are going to get a chance to function correctly. And, by doing THAT, that will give proper communication within the blood vessels. That will very likely reduce and/or eliminate you Secondary Conditions.

It is important to understand, if you are looking for chiropractic care, you must ask yourself first, what type of treatment are you looking for and what are your health goals? Do you want temporarily relief? Or are you interested in fixing the underlying problem to prevent reoccurrence of the same problem?
